The nominee list of the 20th edition of Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), has been released with some interesting pairings ahead of the awards night to be held on May 19, 2019.
Controversies are bound to arise whenever shortlisted for artistes, are released and this year’s is no exception.
Big winners on the nominee shortlist include Stonebwoy (9), Shatta Wale (9), Sarkodie (9), Kuami Eugene (7), Dopenation (4) among many others who were nominated in various categories.
Artiste of the Year
The topmost music award would see the finest music acts, which include King Promise, Kuami Eugene, Joe Mettle, Sarkodie, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, vying for the ultimate.
It will be a keenly contested category considering the uniqueness of each and every act in this category.
Sessions of the Ghanaian music entourage vented their frustrations with the absence of some acts like Kwesi Arthur and Medical who missed out in this particular categories categories.
Album of the Year
Certain artistes did produce some thrilling songs, within the year under review and have had their works recognize and all aiming for the glamorous award.
Shatta Wale’s Reign, Samini ”Untamed”, Diana Hamiltons’s ”I believe”, Akwaboah’s ”Matters of the Heart”, Kuami Eugene ”Rockstar” and Wendy Shay’s ”Shay on you” all made the cut in a keenly contested category.
New Artiste of the Year
Some artistes made significant strides in their music career within the year under review as they thrilled fans with the unique talent.
Kelvynboy, Quamina MP, Dopenation, Eddie Khae, Wendy Shay and Le Meme Gang, have all been nominated and it will be fascinating who walks away with the award.
Gospel Artiste of Year
Some acts did nourish our souls with some good gospel music which includes Joyce Blessing, Diana Hamilton, Akesse Brempong, Obaapa Christy, Joe Mettle and Koda.
Producer of the Year
The beatmakers, who are the vibes behind songs have also being announced with the likes of Kaywa, Killbeats, Kuami Eugene, DDT and MOG beats all shortlisted for the award.
Agitations
Some Ghanaian music entourage have expressed shock over how some thriving artistes, have been overlooked by organizers of the awards.
Kwesi Arthur, arguably one of Ghana’s brightest spot in music around the world, was not included in the best rapper nominees shortlist as well the artiste of the year.
Budding rap artiste, Kofi Mole, did not make the cut Unsung Artiste of the Year while AMG rapper, Medikal, couldn’t make the final cut for artiste of the year.
Another shocker was how popular Ghanaian musician Patapaa made it onto the Hip Pop Artiste of the Year considering his genre of music.
Strongman, another rising rap star, shockingly didn’t it make into the shortlist for the best rapper category.
