The second phase of the Tema Port Expansion Project, which is being supported by Meridian Port Services Limited, saw President Nana Akufo Addo commission a fleet of new gantry cranes and yard works development on Thursday.

In his keynote address, President Akufo-Addo stressed that despite the government’s efforts to address the nation’s economic challenges, the nation remains a safe haven for investment.

“I have long held the belief that it is not prudent to continue importing when we have the capability to create jobs for our vibrant youth population by supporting developments like this,” he said.

“I would like to emphasize my optimism that, despite the challenges we may face, Ghana will once again prove its resilience as we continue to invest in vital sectors of our economy,” he added.

“The gantry cranes represent an additional investment of over $50 million in Ghana’s maritime sector, a testament to MPS’s commitment to fostering economic growth,” said Mr. Mohamed Samara, Chief Executive Officer of MPS, in greeting the guests.

“The state-of-the-art STS cranes, which are categorized as Super-Post Panamax, are able to service the largest vessels in the world. They have an impressive 66-meter outreach and can handle containers up to the 23rd row of vessels.” With their twin-lift spreaders, which can handle loads of up to 65 tons, these cranes also have the unique capability of stacking containers more than ten units high on the deck, the speaker added.

The Tema Port Expansion Project is evidence of MPS’s dedication to promoting value creation in important economic areas. By utilizing state-of-the-art machinery and technology, this project will lower freight costs, opening the door for a thriving and efficient maritime sector.
