In the past three years, 3,688 medical professionals have left Ghana in search of better opportunities abroad, according to the country’s health service.
According to the Ghana Health Service, the number includes essential and qualified caregivers.

In an attempt to allay fears, the Ghana Health Service announced that it has increased study leave for unlicensed nurses going back to 2021 and that most of those who took advantage of the policy would have been eligible to cover the void by mid-year.
During a debate on the Health Ministry’s 2024 budget, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader of Parliament, stated that in order to address the trend, the government should think about raising salaries.
