Dr. Joseph Obeng, President, GUTA

The 24-hour economy policy put forth by National Democratic Congress flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has the support of Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).

He underlined the necessity of improving the current policy, saying that even though it is being implemented, it can still be made better.

In the presence of John Mahama, Dr. Obeng encouraged a tactical change in the scheduling of specific commercial endeavors during a meeting with association members.

He suggested moving these events to the evening to relieve traffic in crowded marketplaces during the day.

According to Dr. Joseph Obeng, this modification could maximize space use and simplify operations for vendors, especially when foot traffic is low.

“We had a programme at the school of mass communication and at that time, people were opposing it but I told them no, even if it is already there, we can always enhance it. There is more that we can do in the night. There are so many things that create nuisance during the day.

“When you go to Opera Square, when you go to Kantamanto or Okaishie, in the afternoon when people are moving, that is when we are offloading our goods. So, it makes the place very congested.

“So, let’s think about the things that create nuisance during the day and fix them in the night,” he stated.
