Raphael Dwamena, a former forward for the Black Stars, passed away on Saturday after collapsing on a football field.

Following the 28-year-old’s heart arrest during a match between Partizani and his Albanian team, Egnatia Rrogozhine, news of his passing broke.

The Superliga Match Day 13 game was suspended due to a tragic incident that occurred in the 23rd minute of play.

Dwamena received an implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) in 2020 while playing for Spanish team Levante after receiving a heart problem diagnosis in 2017.

After receiving medical attention, Dwamena experienced a recurrence in October 2021, collapsing on the field during an Austrian League match between Blau-Weiss and Harterg.

The game was abandoned, but he lived after being promptly stabilized and recuperating in the hospital. The club later released him.

After an agreement was reached, Dwamena’s transfer to Velje Boldklub in the Danish Superliga fell through mostly due to his heart ailment. The club’s sporting director had expressed concerns regarding Dwamena’s cardiac measurement.

The former Levante forward has eight caps with the Black Stars.
