SML/GRA scandal: Ato Forson calls Akufo-Addo’s audit directive a ploy for Govt’ shady deals

Ato Forson

Akufo-Addo, the president, has come under fire from Minority Leader Dr. Ato Forson for his refusal to name KPMG as soon as possible to undertake an audit of the revenue assurance agreement between Strategic Mobilization Ghana Ltd. (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

This follows the President’s Tuesday directive to suspend the revenue assurance agreement between GRA and SML immediately.

Subsequently, Akufo Addo designated KPMG, a firm that provides audit, tax, and advisory services, to carry out an instant audit of the transaction.

In response, the minority leader issued a statement claiming that the president’s decision “has come too late in the day” and that he ought to have taken the lead in addressing the scandal after it occurred.

He went on to say that the Finance Committee has already started an audit of the “infamous agreement” and is actively looking into it as per the directives from Parliament.

He charged that the President was trying to get Parliament to stop looking into this by ordering an audit of the transaction.

“The President, who should have led this fight in the wake of this scandal, is playing catch-up since Parliament has also directed GRA to suspend all payments to SML.”

“This whitewashing attempt by the President in the name of an audit will not dissuade Parliament from looking into this matter to stop the siphoning of state resources into the private pockets of government officials and their crony business partners.”
