The National Democratic Congress (NDC), which is the main opposition party in Ghana, has formally expressed its disapproval of the Electoral Commission’s decision to move the 2024 election date from December to November.

At the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Monday, the Electoral Commission continued to discuss its proposal to move the date of the general elections with the political parties.

The majority of parties had agreed on the planned date, but the NDC ignored this in a statement released on January 30.

The decision was invalid, according to NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiave Kwetey, because at least five of the ten parties in attendance disagreed with the proposed date.

Even though Dr. Bossman Asare, the EC’s Deputy Chairman of Corporate Services, announced the planned adjustment, the NDC further argued that it does not adequately reflect the consensus reached at the Monday Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting.

Rather than suggesting a new date that is unpopular with political parties, Kwetey counselled the EC to give priority to important issues like issuing the 2024 election schedule.
