Asamoah Gyan: Otto Addo needs time to reassemble Black Stars

Following Otto Addo’s return to assume the position of head coach, former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has urged Ghanaians to have patience with him.

Before the March international break, Addo’s status as the team’s coach was established, and he oversaw the matches against Nigeria and Uganda. The Black Stars drew 2-2 with the Cranes after losing 2-1 to Nigeria.

Addo’s return coincides with a challenging time for the national team, as their last victory under Chris Hughton was in September 2023. Ghana has now gone seven games without a win in all competitions after losing his first two games.

The Black Stars legend, Gyan, who was teammates with Otto Addo in the 2006 World Cup, is optimistic about his former teammate’s ability to lead the team when given sufficient time.

“Otto Addo has returned; it’s a different atmosphere and different players. Although he has worked with some of the players, I think it’s still a process,” said Asamoah Gyan on Asempa FM. “He also came with a new staff, so it’s a different era.”

“Let’s see what he also has for us. We will support him through his rebuilding to see where he can take us.

“Ghanaians will be the ones to judge what he has done, so I think we should give him time to rebuild his team.”
